I'm a fan of the Air Display app for my iPad. Once my MacBook Pro and my 3rd-gen iPad are connected to the same network, I can fire up the app and use my iPad as a high-resolution 2nd monitor for my laptop. All the features and functions that i'm used to using a traditional dual monitor setup are available when I download the supporting software for my MacBook and as a $10 app download from iTunes.
If you think 10 bucks is steep when it comes to mobile apps, the folks at Avatron Software have decided to launch Air Display Free, the (you guessed it) free version of the paid app with all the same features, minus the hefty price tag. The free download is available for any iPad (including Mini), iPhone, Android, or Mac or PC and can give you a second monitor, just in case you need to do some heavy pivot table work in Excel…I'm sure you can think of more interesting things to do with a multiple screen display.
With the free version of Air Display the app is ad-supported, but that's the only hitch I could find as every paid feature is available in the free version. So if you're having a hard time convincing somebody (or yourself) why you need a tablet, check out Air Display Free and let us know what you think.
